This is a collection of short stories written over the last decade. They are a mixture of styles and genres, sometimes amusing, sometimes tragic, sometimes surreal.

The Christmas Visitor and Other Stories John Stockbury Books

The Christmas Visitor and Other Stories is a collection of eleven unrelated stories. I found it sort of odd that the book did not have its own cover art design and that the book description did not say anything as to what each story was about. Why would someone go to all the trouble of writing eleven stories and then skip over those important final details? This book was available for free at the time I downloaded it, so I didn't really have anything to lose. I initially skipped over the preface(I suggest you do this as well as it contains a spoiler for the first story) and began from the first story.

The first story, The Christmas Visitor was my favorite out of the collection. It is about a man who crashes a christmas party full of people he doesn't know. I suspected where it was going, and I am glad it turned out the way I thought it would.
Rating: 5/5

The quality of the stories goes down from there. My initial disappointment was from the realization that these were not all
christmas related stories. The author gave no indication that this was the case, but I still felt misled.

The second story, The Great Book Prize, is about a washed up writer watching a writing awards show on television. Maybe I missed something, but I didn't understand the point of this story. I was left with the feeling of 'so what?'
Rating: 1/5

Third, was All For a Smoke. It's a very silly story that might have came from the mind of an 8 year old. It's about a tiger swimming in a river and looking for a cigarette. It also includes an encounter with Albert Einstein.
Rating: 2/5

Fourth, Bloom in Gillingham. It says this is a fantasy story using characters from another book--a book I haven't read. This story contained a lot of sentence fragments and was hard to follow.
Rating: 1/5

Fifth, Dressed to Kill
It's another story about a struggling writer, which seems very uninspired to me, but at least it turned out to be more interesting than the first.
Rating: 4/5

Sixth, Richmond Safari
There's another tiger in a river, but now other zoo animals too. This one feels like I've started reading a longer story half-way through. I liked the sci-fi elements but it ultimately didn't seem to have much of a point. It was a little too short.
Rating: 1/5

Seventh, Mother and Son
This is a depressing story about a mother looking for her son. Some names of characters were given with no explanation of who they are. It needed better character development.
Rating: 1/5

Eighth, Strong language
Yet another story about a writer. This one is arguing with someone who thinks his book is about them. I did not understand the ending.
Rating: 2/5

Ninth, Breaking Point
I noticed a few typos in this one. It is a very bleak story about an innercity school with troubled kids.
Rating: 1/5

Tenth, The Date
This story had a lot of character and development and back story and seemed to forget about the main plot. Boring.
Rating: 1/5

Finally, Ben's Christmas Party
Hey, it's another christmas story! This one is supposedly for young child, but I think any child would lose interest in it fairly quickly. It's about a puppy left home alone at christmas time and gets into some mischief.
Not a bad story overall.
Rating: 3/5

It seems that all of these stories were written by an Englishman and there were a few instances where they speak negatively of Americans. It was nothing that really offended me, however.
