I first read Connie Shelton with the first few Samantha Sweet novels and fell in love with her amusing and informative prose, and all of the characters that people her pages.Remembering Sam's brief meeting with Charlie Parker in one of the earliest stories, I decided to become better acquainted with this spirited gal after having visited New Mexico for the first time. Now I am completely addicted!
As her brother's partner in a private investigations company in Albuquerque, Charlie has a soft spot for the underdog and unjustly maligned which leads her into lots of danger and intrigue. In Phantoms Can Be Murder, Charlie has left puppy, hubby and helicopter piloting at home to visit a mysterious aunt in Bury St. Edmund, U.K. She has allowed herself one week to get to know this forgotten relative and ends up needing to prove a murder before she dpcan head home to New Mexico.
I began this satisfying and sometimes gob-smackingly amazing series of mysteries two months ago and am about to the end. Sob! Connie Shelton's wonderfully original story lines, realistic characters and evocative prose are something not-to-be-missed! I'm hooked, for sure!

Another great story! I'm on to the next! I don't know what I'll read after I've read all of you books. Look forward to the next but don't want the stories to end!
Charlie Parker is an enjoyable character. Mrs. Shelton states she has written 18 books in the past 22 years. That means I have at least another 13 to go. I am looking forward to some more relaxing & intriguing reading. Will I guess who did the dastardly deed before the end of the next story? I still had 2 suspects when the answer was evident at the end of this story.
I have really liked the other books in this series, but this one was so not up to par. Even before the murder happened -- which was way late in the story -- I knew who was going to be murdered, some of why, and by whom. It was all just so obvious, a person could easily figure it out in the dark without turning on a (SPOILER ALERT!) gaslight.
C'mon, Connie, get Charlie back into her element and back into plots that rock!
CHARLIE GETS A LETTER FROM A PREVIOUSLY UNKNOWN AUNT. SHE REQUESTS THAT CHARLIE COME VISIT HER IN ENGLAND. THE AUNT RESIDES IN A VERY OLD TOWN THAT'S HAUNTED, AS WELL AS HISTORICAL. IT TAKE CHARLIE LITTLE TIME BEFORE SHE'S INVESTIGATING ODD HAPPENINGS FOR A FRIEND OF AUNT LOUISA. THIS IS A WINDY TALE THAT IS AN EXCELLENT READ.
I'm a big Connie Shelton fan, but was a bit disappointed with this one. A bit slow-moving, with characters that were hard to like - or dislike! The storyline had plenty of potential, but much of it was unmet. Charlie Parker works best when surrounded by the regulars - Drake, Ron, et al.
I'll keep reading the Charlie Parker books, and hope that future ones have a bit more zip.
I have faithfully read the books in this series from the first one to this latest novel. I have almost read them all. The character of Charlie Parker has become an old friend that will regretfully be gone with the last book. I hope that you will enjoy the journey as much as I have.
